چکیده

We summarise the properties of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) project, discuss our software infrastructure, and outline the architecture of the SDSS image processing pipelines. We then discuss two of the algorithms used in the SDSS image processing; the Karhunen-Loève transform based modelling of the spatial variation of the PSF, and the use of galaxy models in star/galaxy separation. We conclude with the first author’s personal opinions on the challenges that the astronomical community faces with major software projects.

Reliability and Validity of A Persian Version of Substance Dependence Severity Scale (SDSS)

Abstract Background: Iran (I.R.) is suffering the growing problem of opiate abuse. In evaluation of the treatment plan for opium dependent patients, a valid and reliable instrument is needed to measure patients' severity of dependence. This study aimed to assess the reliability and validity of the Persian version of the "Substance Dependence Severity Scale" (SDSS). Methods: After tr...

Galaxy clustering in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS): A first comparison with the APM Galaxy Survey

We compare the large scale galaxy clustering in the new SDSS early data release (EDR) with the clustering in the old APM Galaxy Survey. We make equal area projection pixel maps, similar to the ones used in the APM analysis to allow a direct comparison between the clustering in the two samples. We concentrate our analysis on an equatorial SDSS strip, 2.5 wide and 66 degrees long. Galaxies with P...

Preparing for Advanced Ligo: a Star–galaxy Separation Catalog for the Palomar Transient Factory

The search for fast optical transients, such as the expected electromagnetic counterparts to binary neutron star mergers, is riddled with false positives (FPs) ranging from asteroids to stellar flares. While moving objects are readily rejected via image pairs separated by ∼1 hr, stellar flares represent a challenging foreground, significantly outnumbering rapidly evolving explosions. Identifyin...

Optical selection of quasars: SDSS and LSST

Over the last decade, quasar sample sizes have increased from several thousand to several hundred thousand, thanks mostly to SDSS imaging and spectroscopic surveys. LSST, the next-generation optical imaging survey, will provide hundreds of detections per object for a sample of more than ten million quasars with redshifts of up to about seven. We briefly review optical quasar selection technique...

A Census of Object Types and Redshift Estimates in the SDSS Photometric Catalog from a Trained Decision-Tree Classifier

We have applied ClassX, an oblique decision tree classifier optimized for astronomical analysis, to the homogeneous multicolor imaging data base of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), training the software on subsets of SDSS objects whose nature is precisely known via spectroscopy. We find that the software, using photometric data only, correctly classifies a very large fraction of the objects...
